Hot Dog Chili

Forget the canned stuff! Homemade hot dog chili is easy to make, delicious to eat!

Here's what you'll need:

  • Ground beef
  • Garlic
  • White onion
  • Tomato sauce
  • Ketchup
  • Mustard
  • Southern Hospitality by Gulf Coast Smoke
  • Chili powder
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Water

The Process

There are a few differences between hot dog chili and regular chili. Regular chili has more liquid, beans, and large chunks of tomatoes among other things. Hot dog chili is slightly thicker in consistency, but leaves out the beans and tomatoes.

Start by mincing 1 tsp of fresh garlic. Then, finely dice 1/3 cup of white onion. As mentioned before, you don't want large chunks in hot dog chili, so the smaller the onions, the better.

Heat a skillet on medium heat. Drizzle in a tablespoon of oil and add the ground beef. Cook the ground beef until completely brown and drain the excess fat from the pan, leaving about a tablespoon of fat for the onions and garlic.

Next, add the finely diced onions and minced garlic to the ground beef and cook for 2-3 minutes until the onions begin to soften and become translucent. After 2-3 minutes, add 1 tablespoon of Southern Hospitality and 1 tsp of chili powder to the ground beef and stir. When you think of the spices in hot dog chili, you think of chili powder, garlic and onion powder, salt, pepper, and sugar. Southern Hospitality has all of these spices in it, making it perfect for this recipe.

Once the spices are mixed in, add 1-8 oz can of tomato sauce, 1 1/2 tablespoons of ketchup, 1/2 tablespoon of mustard, 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce, 1/4 tsp salt, and 1/3 cup of water. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally until the chili has thickened. Taste and add any additional spices needed.

Serve on chili dogs, chili cheese fries, or everyones favorite: Frito pie!
